This week we take a look at another of the regional events for Metal United Down Under, this time turning our attention to Lismore in far North New South Wales. In fact, Lismore is so close to the border that the majority of bands playing the Lismore MUDU show are from Queensland. Wherever they hail from though, each of these bands alongside the rest of the line-up are sure to show you a hard and heavy good time!
EVIL EYE (QLD)
Crushingly heavy, Evil Eye possess a roaring bass rumble that will shake the entire town of Lismore. This is of course joined by the seismic blast of chunky riffs, and face-meltingly harsh vocals that might bring to mind Jens Kidman of Meshuggah. While they match any band for heaviness, Evil Eye take a more traditional Death Metal approach than Meshuggah, though listeners may discern a hint of Djent here and there. Overall however, Evil Eye simply apply heaviness directly to the face in a manner that will keep your head banging and windmilling non-stop.

KOLD CREATURE (QLD)
Alan Mahood’s drums lead the rolling groove of Kold Creature, a band who draw on a diverse range of influences from the more upfront riffs and chunk of Pantera, to even a touch of The Cure weaving through some of the more distant, background guitar parts. Chris Ross and Lyndon Bauer prove a formidable combination on guitars, delivering a focused balance of melody and brutality that could at times as easily be compared to Baroness as Lamb of God. Ross also provides vocals, again with a well-placed balance between clean and harsh moments. Overall, Kold Creature are a versatile band sure to appeal to a wide variety of Metal tastes.

Guitars and bass provide to deliver deep, rumbling depths of Metal, with drums focusing the intent to an almost militaristic vibe. Mergatroyd’s vocals have firm roots in the world of Thrash, harking back to Slayer’s Tom Araya. However, Mergatroyd are otherwise another band bringing heavy groove to Lismore, proving that Groove Metal is most certainly alive and well as a subgenre. Mergatroyd throb with power at the bottom end, surfacing from the depths for moments of melody that keep the songs moving and the listener engaged.

SYMPTOMS PERSIST (ACT)
They say if symptoms persist, see your doctor… and you just might need to if you get in the pit for these guys! A touch a classic Thrash, an injection of Industrial Metal thunder, some bass grooves and hissing, snarling vocals that might bring to mind Peter Tagtgren or Al Jourgensen, and it sounds like the ingredients for a good time! Vocalist and guitarist Werner Kalz isn’t one to shy away from surprises, with his varied approach to guitar work raising the spectres of System of a Down as easily as paying tribute to the great luminaries of Thrash. Symptoms Persist will be a unique find on the Metal United bill, so Lismore attendees take note!
