Hot on the heels of Metal United Worldwide, Metal United Down Under returns in September with simultaneous events occurring across South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania! In this edition of OVERDRIVE OZ we cover bands from both the Melbourne and Port Pirie, SA events. There’s always plenty of diversity in the Metal United line-ups, so there’s guaranteed to be something for everyone!
For densely packed and powerful Thrash Metal, Abraxxas have the goods. With savage vocals and ripping guitars, Abraxxus present sheer brutality through their performance. It’s more than just heaviness however, as the hooks in their tracks will have you banging your head, and coming back for more. The energy in Abraxxas’ work is exceptional, with non-stop riffs and judiciously placed solos to really show off the skills of their guitarists. With their sound inspired by the Teutonic lords of Thrash the likes of Kreator and Destruction, you’ll find these guys are more than just another Metallica or Slayer clone.

Frenetic riffs and truly impressive drumming form the backbone of Alarum’s sound. Progressive elements infuse the work from these interesting beats, while vocalist Mark Palfreyman captures both deep angst and moments of beauty. Guitarists Scott Young and John Sanders are a powerful dual attack force, exchanging diverse solos as well as giving space to Palfreyman’s bass to truly open up the complexity of the band’s sound. It’s rare to see such Progressive elements combined with such relentlessly heavy yet in some respects still uplifting work, but Alarum pull it off with aplomb.

Veterans of the Australian music scene, LORD bring a refined and polished approach to classic Heavy Metal. Their high-octane tracks are filled with tasty riffs and headbanging beats, while Lord Tim’s vocals stand with the very best of Australian heavy music with his depth and control. Lord Tim and Mark Furtner are a formidable pair on guitars, weaving a sonic spell that injects elements of Power Metal into the galloping pace of their classic sound. Owing much to the 80s yet never losing their relevance, LORD are a dominant Metal force that may well be looked to in order to see how it’s done.

Classic, irrevocably brutal Death Metal is the purview of Monoliyth. Andrew Parkinson’s vocals are truly monstrous, while Adam Anderson’s drumming is simply unstoppable. Mick Barr and Homa King combine forces to deliver an impenetrable wall of riffs, while Bo Remy lays a solid bass foundation. As well as their chugging riffs, Barr and King throw in solos with enough speed to leave your head spinning if you weren’t already uncontrollably windmilling. With production reminiscent of the European old school, Monoliyth have a pure sound likely to please even the most discerning of underground Death Metal fans.

OATH OF DAMNATION (SA)
Oath of Damnation’s works are deep, dark and ominous, drawing the listener into deserted and unhallowed ground before unleashing absolute fury upon them. Constantine’s drums raise a true inferno alongside the similarly blistering and at times surprisingly melodic guitar work of Nekromancer. The conflagration is haunted by the rasps and screams of the appropriately named vocalist Doomsayer, while the tenebrous compositions are completed by the beguiling keys of Haemorrh. Oath of Damnation will, without a doubt, be one of the heaviest bands on this year’s Metal United Down Under line-up, so prepare yourself… if you can.
