The steel rises again at Sydney’s Bald-Faced Stag! This two-day event will be an absolute celebration of Heavy Metal, with a killer line-up from all over Australia, as well as Singapore’s Tormentress playing their first and only Australian show! With plenty of iconic bands playing this iconic venue, you absolutely can’t go wrong. Victorians Harlott and Eyefear will be playing their only Sydney shows of 2018 at this event as well, so you’ve got every reason to be there – but if you need them, here are five more!
Absolute chugging riffs, powerful drums and classic Metal attitudes are the hallmarks of Demonhead. If you’re a fan of the more melodic range of classic Testament, you’ll be well pleased with a Demonhead show. Dave Lowes brings plenty of power and fury to his vocals without being overwrought, while he and fellow guitarist Roo Power belt out as many chunky riffs as you could possibly fit into three or four minutes. Pure, no questions asked, Thrash-infused heaviness.

HOBBS ANGEL OF DEATH (VIC)
Well-established veterans of the Australian heavy scene, Hobbs Angel of Death present unadulterated classic Death Metal. Iago Bruchi’s drums absolutely rip through every song, setting a breakneck pace that is ably met by guitarists Simon Wizen and frontman Peter Hobbs. Hobbs’ vocals hail from the Thrash-inspired end of the Death Metal world, bringing attitude rather than growls to his declarations, perhaps to be compared to classic Venom. That being said, he’s more than capable of raising both rage and anguish, and the brutal guitar work of Hobbs’ and Wizen’s combined assault plumbs the darkness admirably, with Wizen’s leads particularly impressive as he weaves his beautiful solos.

Killrazer bring a touch of Thrash sensibility to an otherwise pure, classic Death Metal approach, unleashing an assault of heavy riffs and solos that emerge furiously from the wall of sound to coil around the listener. Doug Dalton and Zoran Mrakic provide unrelentingly harsh vocals, while the power of Luke Cook’s drums is undeniable. The true strength of Killrazer however is in the seamless transition from chunky riffs, to expansive bridges, to the aforementioned solos. For Dalton and fellow guitarist Jimmy Lardner-Brown to layer such changes of mood across this old school sound is truly impressive.

Fast, chunky riffs and drumming to match are led by wild guitars and pumping, punk-infused Thrash vocals. Psychonaut’s pace never lets up, with quick changes throughout the songs keeping the listener on their toes… or off their feet entirely as they leap about the pit, because these guys will get you moving. Founding member Mark De Vattimo is sure to demonstrate exactly why he is an award-winning guitar player with every performance, his solo sections standing out from the otherwise deeply heavy material that somehow still has a bit of a party vibe to it. All in all, the spirit of rock and Metal combined is in pure form with Psychonaut.

Classic Power Metal, strong with the influence of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, is alive and well with Stormforge. The spirit of Iron Maiden cannot be denied in the guitar work of Flynn Fredriksson and Raj Singarajah, while Courtney O’Leary’s vocals are more reminiscent of Timo Kotipelto of Stratovarius. The fantasy element of Power Metal is well served in the lyrics and climactic music, with galloping riffs and plenty of rapid solos and dual guitar attacks. The Metal of hope and valour is sure to keep spirits high wherever Stormforge play.
