Fans of Blackened Thrash, take note! Norwegian trio Aura Noir will be hitting Australian shores for three blistering shows in July, including two intimate shows at Melbourne’s Bendigo Hotel and Sydney’s Bald-Faced Stag, and the Malign Rites Extreme Metal Festival at Melbourne’s Croxton Bandroom. A host of East Coast extreme Metal bands will be supporting Aura Noir’s trek, so now is the time to get to know them!

GOLGOTHAN REMAINS (NSW)

Sydney’s enigmatic Golgothan Remains unleash blisteringly intense Death Metal, with furious drums, unstoppable riffs, and guttural vocals to satisfy even those who are the most discerning about their growls. This guy couldn’t be more brutal if he were gargling nails. That being said, Golgothan Remains offer more than just an impenetrable wall of sound. Their guitars ebb and flow like a cresting and pounding tsunami, bringing destruction no doubt, but with a perverse sort of beauty. Seismic, climactic, and eminently well-constructed.

GRAVEIR (QLD)

It doesn’t get much more kvlt than this. Bleak and distant, with the hallmark “underproduced” sound of underground Black Metal, Graveir transcend the morass of fuzziness and inscrutability to create something deeply listenable and fulfilling. There is a bit of droning to the riffs, but it builds, twists and turns in such a way as to stay completely engaging; there is far more to the drums than just constant blast-beats; and the adherence to the kvlt sound has not stopped Graveir from enhancing the terrifying and exultant impact of the vocals. A fine example of underground Black Metal at its most compelling.

PLOUGHSHARE (ACT)

As rapid-fire as it comes even in the Black Metal world, the pace of Ploughshare’s guitars and drums is absolutely indomitable. The drums are absolutely relentless, while the guitars drive forth at such a pace that the notes almost become indistinguishable from each other. Through all this self-described sepulchral din, the vocals cut through in controlled intonations, grounding what is an otherwise utterly chaotic sonic force. Music to bring about the collapse of civilisation to.

SPIRE (QLD)

Spire’s brutality quite simply knows no bounds. Of the enigmatic Black Metal ilk who take to hiding their names and faces, their air of mystery continues in their music that seems to hide baneful cosmic secrets behind overwhelming guitar assaults and earth-shattering drums, alongside harsh growls that occasionally give way to commanding and declaratory cleans. It is useless to resist the sensation of getting swept up in Spire’s sonic maelstrom; you’ll only prolong the inevitable hypnosis. As brutal as they are, there is an almost-ambient charm about Spire’s music that will leave it sitting in your subconscious long after the last haunting note has rung out.

THRALL (VIC)

Thrall is the musical progeny of Tom Void, who handles almost all creative duties in the studio, while joined by other Blackened Thrash Metal miscreants live. Surely a descendent of Venom, Thrall adopt a catchy, Thrash-based riff approach in amongst the dark urgency of Black Metal. To hear Thrash-style riffs with a more typically Black guitar tone always makes for an engaging sound, and one you can certainly bang your head to. The style allows for a fast pace without being over the time in terms of drum techniques – there’s more than blast beats going on here. One to get the Thrashers tearing up the room in the midst of the cold desolation wrought by the other bands on these bills.
