We at Overdrive music magazine had the chance to experience Gatekeepers new album East of Sun due to be released on the 27th April 2018.
If you are looking for a band that can deliver Epic Heavy Metal the boys hailing from Vancouver have what you crave. The band was formed in 2010 and is made up of Jean-Pierre Abboud on Lead Vocals and chorus, Jeffrey Black on Rhythm/Lead Guitar and chorus, Kenny Kroecher on Lead/Rhythm Guitar, David Messier on Bass guitar and chorus, and Tommy Tro – Battery, or as some like to call it drums.
They have two releases under their belts to date, an EP Prophecy and Judgement released in 2013 and Retaliator (split with ETERNAL CHAMPION) in 2015.
The new album was recorded over the span of six months at Harbourside Studios in Vancouver, Canada. “East Of Sun” was produced by Mike Rogerson, whose previous credits include ANNIHILATOR, AGGRESSION, 88 MILE TRIP and LOVERBOY.
This album will not be for everyone and that is ok, the boys state on their Facebook page “If your interests lie in the direction of things ancient, lost and far away, Gatekeeper might be for you. If not? Good riddance.” They are not looking to please the masses but create a musical experience for their fans, they have achieved this for their upcoming release.
The guys released the first single ‘Blade of Cimmeria’ on the 4th March this year and have received some great feedback from the fans. This is the first song on the album and packs quite a punch. Check it out here.
From the start of this album, Jean-Pierre Abboud blows you away with his vocal range, that paired with the world of sound created by the guitar work really sets the tone for the album. This band would be highly recommended for fans of Omen, early Manowar, Manilla Road, Atlantean Kodex!
The guys paint a picture of how they see the music and this translates through and rips everything in its path apart. “East of Sun is pure heavy metal with a sword and sorcery flourish. We wear our influences on our sleeves, but we don’t want to be a pale imitation of them. We try to capture the spirit of what we love without copying anyone’s’ notes. This album has our fastest song and it’s got our biggest, most epic slow-burner and many songs in between. It has melodic electric guitar playing coupled with fierce riffs, thunderous rhythms, mystical acoustic passages and, of course, a unique and varied performance from our singer, Jean-Pierre Abbaud (SPELL, BORROWED TIME)”. Geoffrey Blackwell states.
‘East of Sun’ will be released on April 27 and will be available on compact disc including 2 bonus tracks (“OMEN’s “Death Rider” and SAVATAGE’s “Hall Of The Mountain King”), on gatefold vinyl including A2 poster and digital.
