Announcing NICEFEST 2018 in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane

Art As Catharsis are proud to unveil NICEFEST 2018: a showcase of progressive music from the Australian underground.

NICEFEST 2018 marks the fourth edition of the festival, which takes place in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane across March and April.

“We want to provide a platform for bands who are doing something different,” says Art As Catharsis label manager Lachlan Dale.

“We don’t care if the style is experimental pop, acoustic folk, Persian classical or progressive metal. It’s about the attitude and the approach of the artist: are they trying new things? Creating new forms? Pushing boundaries?”

Sydney’s Hashshashin will be playing across all three shows in support of their upcoming album ‘nihsahshsaH (adj.)’ – a live collaboration that complements the trio’s brand of sun-baked, Middle Eastern psychedelia with improvisation by Simon Dawes of Instrumental (adj.), whose spacious and creative guitar playing calls to mind Bill Frisell.

Instrumental (adj.) will be playing Sydney and Brisbane editions in support of their new EP ‘Reductio ad Absurdum’, a brilliant step forward for progressive, heavy music in Australia.

In Brisbane:

Progressive psych and stoner act Dreamtime will headline the Brisbane addition, alongside energetic local prog rock outfit Kodiak Empire.

They are joined by experimental rock act Big Dead, progressive metallers Weightless In Orbit and the hugely promising Requin.

In Sydney:

The Sydney edition will be headlined by Brian Campeau – who is launching a new single of progressive, acoustic folk on Art As Catharsis – and Meniscus, who will perform a uniquely stripped-back set of intimate material.

After a busy 12 months touring in support of new album ‘Refractions’ including main stage appearances at Dunk Festival Belgium, Progfest Sydney & Melbourne and supporting UK heavyweights Anathema at a sold-out Metro Theatre, Meniscus will debut a rare set of ambient and cinematic cuts from their extensive back catalogue in the surrounds of this year’s venue Lazybones.

The festival is rounded by the classical Persian music of Hamed Sadeghi, neo-classical cello stylistics of raven, and the progressive electronica of Comatone + Foley.

In Melbourne:

Ambient/doom duo Warpigs will headline the Melbourne event alongside the reverb-drenched post-punk splendour of half/cut.

Also playing are Brisbane prog-rock outfit Kodiak Empire and experimental pop act Lack The Low, who will be launching a new single on Art As Catharsis.
