The antics kicked off nice as early on Saturday morning, as the arena opened up at 8am for people to get breakfast or an early morning coffee and either head back to their sleeping quarters, or get disappointed to find out that the yoga that was meant to start at 9am was cancelled. After seeing the insane amount of blue and yellow confetti that rained onto the wet mosh pit last night, the hard work of the overnight cleaners was highly noticeable as there was very little remaining to be seen!
The sun made a brief appearance before Triple J Unearthed winners Dregg took to the stage at 10:40am for the first set of the day; of course the skies had already decided to open up and were casting a light drizzle across the site. Between the face paint on the guitarist, the white gas mask on the bassist and the singer sporting a white shirt with a message to “Google Armenian Genocide”, there was a nice visual display added to the high energy show that the band displayed. There was a moment of laughter when a song was introduced as being about “absolutely nothing” and Dregg most certainly made the most of their hard earned twenty minute set!

Arteries and Save The Clocktower were the next two bands to grace the stage, much to the delight of those braving the rain. At this point of the day, more festival goers had started to make their way to the arena after getting breakfast and/or coffee, as well as the first of the artist signings of the day. The activity and buzz was starting to rise and the pit was starting to grow in both size and intensity as The Beautiful Monument took to the stage. The energy was high and the set just flowed together so seamlessly that before you knew it, they were walking off at the end of the twenty minute set leaving fans wanting more.

Dear Seattle took to the stage at roughly 1:20pm; this reviewer was taking the chance to get some much needed food into him, as well as heading back to his sleeping quarters to have a few drinks with friends and let his phone charge for the upcoming evening. The mosh was going to be of a decent size though, as there were more people moving into the arena than moving out of it! Introvert kicked the mosh into the next gear by delivering the crowd an energy lift as Outright continued the trend of causing carnage and chaos in the pit; bodies were flying, the pit was surging, and there was beautiful vocal harmony amongst those who were singing! Cursed Earth had their work cut out for them to make sure that they were the perfect choice to conclude the shorter sets of the day and they did not disappoint; considering the wide variety of fans in the pit, there was nothing but pure appreciation as the band blew their way through a very sharp, switched on and ferocious twenty minutes that concluded with a large cheer of appreciation from fans.

4:10 saw the first thirty minute set of the day take place; this set belonged to Young Lions and from the first song of their set, front-man Zach Britt was leading a pit wide singalong! Matt Gibson was perched behind his drum-kit singing along, whilst bass player Morgan Castle was nothing but smiles and pure energy. Multiple times during the set Britt would come down off the stage and stand on the rail, before crowd surfing over the mosh instructing fans to “take me out as far as this cord allows me!” Unfortunately during set-closer Burn The Money there was a small power failure; this just lead to Young Lions starting the song again once the power was restored, much to the delight of those in the pit.

Void of Vision kicked off the second half of the Saturday line-up to a hungry crowd of hardcore dancer and dedicate long-time fans, through the blistering rain and a few stage antics of climbing the entire stage scaffolding, Void Of Vision have proved once again they’re on top of their game as one of Australia’s fastest-rising heavy bands. Having travelled from the UK, Roam were seeing quite a few people make their way into the arena and from this reviewer’s tent, it sounded like a set that was most unfortunate to have missed! The rain started to pick up a little bit more for Being As An Ocean’s set, which just shows that the universe has a sense of humour to it; however it didn’t dampen the spirits of those who came out to see the set, as this was by no means the worst that festival goers had experienced!

As the sun started to slowly set on Tarwin Lower, Make Them Suffer made their way onto the stage approximately 7:40pm to a pit that was growing larger and larger as time went on; people were starting to make their way into the arena and stake out their spot for the upcoming night of music ahead! Having the second last thirty minute set of the day, Make Them Suffer made sure that they showed promotors why they were unfortunate in missing out on a longer set! The pit was going insane and mental as we were treated to an explosion of metal-core from the western state of our beautiful country as unclean vocalist Sean Harmanis was inciting crowd surfers and non-stop movement from within the pit.

Injecting yet some more international flavour into the Saturday line-up, Knucklepuck delivered a nice, tight and switched on set that showcased the reason why they were invited to perform at Unify 2018! Bringing a nice refreshing pop-punk sound to the stage after Make Them Suffer’s metal allowed those in the mosh to get a small bit of respite, rest and more importantly some fresh air; mind you, that was before those within the mosh who received their second wind started launching themselves to the top of the mosh and crowd-surfing.

The first forty minute set of Saturday evening went to Americans Stick To Your Guns, who blew everyone away as they growled, shredded and incited chaos amongst those who were in the pit for the remainder of the night! An ultra-fast paced set that was led by front-man Jesse Barnett commanded for bodies to get airborne as security were made to earn their money, resulted in those at the very front of the mosh experiencing quite the level of discomfort as they fought to keep their head out of the way of those flying bodies behind them.

Kicking off at approximately 10:30, the Sydney based quintet of Hellions showed why they were elevated to the thirst last spot of the night! From the opening chord, each and every band member was hard to follow as they were running around the stage and trying to expend the high amount of pent up energy that was clearly visible. Performing a mixture of older songs as well as songs from the new upcoming album, Hellions fans were treated to a real treat as Marcus Bridge from Northlane came out and sang a duet with Dre Faivre.

Before starting their run of five shows tomorrow in Melbourne, Hands Like Houses were the perfect band to warm up the crowd and make sure that everyone in attendance was still awake! After walking out on stage just past 11:30pm, the energy that was showcased the five band members on stage was very closely rivalled by the energy that was being shown within the mosh and it stayed this way for the full forty minutes. Front man Trenton Woodley was running around the stage and leading a 3000+ strong singalong, whilst Matt Parkitny oversaw everything elevated behind his drum kit, Joel Tyrrell was making the stage shake with his clean, crisp bass as Matt Cooper and Alexander Pearson were causing heads to bang in unison and bodies to fly thanks to the riffs that were being projected through the speakers!

Headline act The Amity Affliction made their way out onto stage around 12:45am Sunday morning, but you wouldn’t have known it was so late by the audible cheer that arose from the long awaiting mosh pit. Playing a mixture of old fan favourites and newer songs, front man Joel Birch showcased his vocal talent as he went between showcasing the unclean vocals that early Amity are known for and the newer clean vocals that he has experimented with lately, pairing into a beautiful harmonisation with Ahren Stringer throughout the hour long set. Extending past their 1:40am finish time, Amity didn’t walk off stage until almost 2am as they showered the mosh pit with more streamers that somehow left the overnight clean-up crew a bigger task than the night before!
