There are few bands in the history of Heavy Metal that have managed to transform their existence as a collection of mere musical artists into that of icons of folklore and myth. However, Norwegian Black Metal goliaths Mayhem are one such group that have succeeded in transcending such boundaries to forever engrave themselves in the cultural zeitgeist and lay the foundations for subversive and controversial artistic expression well into the 21st century and beyond. Now, after 23 years since the ghastly conception of the band’s first full-length studio album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Mayhem have set their sights upon the not-so-frostbitten land of Australia in January 2018 to tour in remembrance of an album that is often cited as the spawning point for the Second Wave of Norwegian Black Metal and its unholy offspring.

Here at OVERDRIVE Magazine, we have decided to provide you with five reasons why Mayhem’s upcoming tour Down Under is an experience you will not want to miss!

  1. This tour will include three original members who all performed on ‘De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.’

For the last couple of decades, Mayhem have gone through a wide array of live and studio members which has led to the band shifting their lyrical and musical themes with each passing era. However, for the duration of this tour, Mayhem have decided to perform tracks from De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas with three of the five original members who performed on the aforementioned album: Necrobutcher, Hellhammer and Attila Csihar. This will ensure that audiences will experience a live performance that is the closest rendition to the original studio version of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas that Mayhem has executed in years.

  1. Fans can expect to hear a whole range of classics from De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.

Whilst sinister classics such as ‘Freezing Moon,’ ‘Pagan Fears’ and ‘Funeral Fog’ are staples of most live Mayhem shows, on the upcoming Australian tour, fans can expect to hear other Black Metal anthems from the legendary album. Tracks such as ‘From the Dark Past,’ ‘Life Eternal’ and ‘Cursed in Eternity’ are all possible special picks for Mayhem’s setlist when they bring the darkness down under in January of 2018.

  1. The De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas tour will run across five different cities across five different dates.

For their upcoming De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas tour Down Under in January 2018, Mayhem will be performing across five different cities on five different dates. These cities include Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Hobart. This ensures that across the nation, no fans will miss out on the blasphemous and hellish processions that will unfold within venues across Australia coming early 2018.

  1. Mayhem gigs are always a sight to behold, and who knows what could be in store for this tour…

Mayhem have never been a band to shy away from dramatic stage theatrics and controversial appearances. With the upcoming Australian tour in 2018, fans can be sure to expect an unforgettable and atmospheric performance adorned with all the bells and whistles (or rather, sacrilegious props and bombastic lighting) associated with the Mayhem name.

  1. Mayhem will be supported by three other excellent bands of a blackened ilk.

In support of Mayhem on their upcoming January 2018 Australian-wide tour, three bands with distinctly different stylistic approaches to Black Metal will share the stage as openers for the Norwegian gods of darkness. Bolzer, Ruins and Departe are all radically unique acts that bring varying approaches to contemporary Black Metal. From the Thrash-paced riffing of Bolzer, to the Death Metal stylings of Ruins and the oppressive atmospherics of Departe, there is something for all audience members to appreciate within these supporting groups.

Mayhem will be coming to a venue near your city from the 16th – 21st of January 2018. This is one show you will not want to miss!
